On July 22, Venezuela began a nationwide deployment of more than 380,000 members of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) as part of Plan Republica, an operation aimed at guaranteeing security and peace during the municipal elections scheduled for July 27, 2025. These forces will protect 15,731 polling stations and ensure the integrity of electoral materials as over 21 million Venezuelans head to the polls.
General Vladimir Padrino Lopez, Venezuela’s Minister of Defense, affirmed the FANB’s readiness to support what he called “a new democratic journey.” He emphasized that the military deployment also secures the Third National Popular Consultation, a parallel electoral process, as well as upcoming indigenous community elections slated for August.
The upcoming municipal elections mark the 33rd electoral process since the Bolivarian Revolution began, offering voters a choice for 2,806 public offices ,including 335 mayoralties and 2,471 council seats.
Of special note are the 69 seats reserved for Indigenous representation across 596 constituencies. The government has set up over 20,000 polling locations, with a significant number specially designated for youth voters, ensuring widespread access and full participation.
The Great Simon Bolivar Patriotic Pole (Gppsb), a coalition allied with Chavismo, is mobilizing for the campaign’s closing rallies across multiple states. Jorge Rodriguez, leader of the Ven25+ command, framed July 27 as a “historic date” and urged Venezuelans to deepen resistance against bureaucracy and corruption while building a popular majority capable of delivering effective governance.

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello reported recent arrests of paramilitaries from Colombia and Trinidad as well as local criminal gangs intending to destabilize the elections. Among those detained were four members of the notorious “Los Chevrolets” gang, who were allegedly plotting attacks on polling stations in Aragua state. Cabello’s announcements reaffirm the government’s commitment to secure a peaceful and fair electoral process free from violent interference.
Venezuela’s massive security deployment and grassroots political mobilization signal the resilience of the Bolivarian democratic process against both internal and external attempts to undermine public participation. The July 27 elections stand as a testament to Venezuela’s continued dedication to popular sovereignty and political inclusion.
